Dr. David Liu is a General and Upper Gastrointestinal surgeon, servicing Melbourne’s burgeoning Northern, Eastern and Western suburbs. He consults in his main rooms at Whittlesea Specialist Clinic, Whittlesea and Northpark Private Hospital, Bundoora. He sees all patients, private and uninsured, WorkCover, as well as TAC. David also practices at Austin Health and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Delivering timely, consistent, compassionate, and high-quality care to his patients are his core values.

David graduated from Medicine at the University of Melbourne in 2007. He commenced specialist General Surgery training in 2011 at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and at Austin Health. David undertook additional Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery training through the prestigious AANZGOSA (Australia & Aotearoa New Zealand Gastric & Oesophageal Surgery Association) program at Flinders Medical Centre, South Australia, and Austin Hospital, Victoria. In these centres, David trained with internationally renowned surgeons, and performed high volume surgery for the treatment of gastro-oesophageal cancers, acid-reflux disease, hiatus hernias, obesity, achalasia, pharyngeal diverticulum, and complex abdominal wall hernias.

David specialises in all areas of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. In particular, he has a subspecialty interest in the management of oesophageal and stomach cancers. He and his team offer state-of-the-art treatment for these conditions, which includes a personalised preoperative and postoperative program, as well as endoscopic, minimally-invasive and open surgery.

David also provides comprehensive management in a wide range of upper gut conditions including acid-reflux, hiatus hernias, achalasia, and pharyngeal pouches. He treats most general surgical ailments including gallstones, abdominal wall hernias, as well as lumps and bumps.

Importantly, David is passionate about research, teaching and service innovation. He has over 60 publications, contributes to the latest clinical practice guidelines, and has an excellent track record in research. He leads multiple national and international collaborative projects, with the aim of delivering the best evidence to guide safe and effective surgical practice.

Moreover, David is keen to speak directly with any practitioner regarding their patients. David Liu, Tom Sweeney, Malcolm Wiley and Vikram Balakrishnan share a common practice, and together, they provide complete specialist coverage of the entire gastrointestinal system.
